Inside the Code Out of Frame

Book design for graduate project by Romi Bendalak at Bezalel Department of Visual and Material Culture, 2025. The book examines the archive of the late Israeli fashion photographer Sammy Ben Gad, who photographed countless Israeli beauty pageant winners and models for LaIsha and other magazines, through a theoretical lens, drawing on various sources, including feminist and post-structuralist theorists. The thesis seeks to examine how Ben Gad’s photographic gaze shaped the image of the woman in Israel in these decades and how it continues to influence the perceptions of beauty and femininity today.
