Things That Can Be Measured

Book for graduation project by Mor Peled at Bezalel Industrial Design Masters. The project looked at the farewell scene in Lost in Translation (Coppola, 2003) and asked what would be the outcome if a machine tried to measure aspects of a complex, emotional scene with technical, digital tools. Peled used computer vision algorithms to analyze different elements of the scene (such as motion, color, object detection, emotion detection etc.) in a series of experiments, and presented their outcomes in a video and the book. The book included a historical background essay, a series of visual measurements, textual measurments (AI analyzation of the film script for themes in recurring words, and measuring the amount of times these words appear), and compressions and traces - visual represantations of the scene with different AI-aided compression and averaging methods.
